I was at the Aquatic Center enjoying an afternoon of cool water with my kids when the call came from Alyssa that her water had broke and she was in labor. I laughed when I saw the date because Alyssa had assured me that she always goes past 41 weeks and yet here she was, in labor, on her due date!
I love daylight labors especially when I get to photograph a birth in a room with big open windows like Alyssa and Steve’s home.
Alyssa’s husband spent the afternoon filling up the birth tub….
…while the older children came in and out of the room…mostly bored but occasionally interested in the proceedings.
Alyssa worked hard breathing through her contractions and accepting each one as they came resting in between as she could.
Homebirths are often relaxed and festive events. Alyssa’s labor was no different. We talked and laughed and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine. When dinner time rolled around Steve went to a nearby store and brought home soup, salads, and sandwiches. The kids hung out totally comfortable in their home.
As the sun set labor picked up. The room darkened our voices quieted and Alyssa focused on the work ahead of her. She listened to her body and soon was gently pushing her baby out into the world.
Congratulations Alyssa, Steve, and family! It was such an honor to witness Mace’s journey earthside!
