The Birth of Walter {Bellingham Birth Photography}

posted in: Birth | 0

I have been a Bellingham birth photographer since 2010.

It never, ever gets old.

I was shopping at Walmart when I got the text that Amy was in labor and things were moving fast.

I finished paying for my purchases and headed home to grab my bag.

I always have it packed and ready to go by 38 weeks, so it was a quick trip home.

I love shooting births at Birth Roots Birth Center. The rooms are spacious and full of natural light. I was hoping for a daytime birth so I could take advantage of the beautiful lighting.

Amy was already working hard when I arrived.

She was settled in the birth tub, comfortable and in her zone.

As a birth photographer, I always try to stay in the background. I always try to be aware of the atmosphere and vibe in the room.

Amy’s baby was posterior which meant pushing took a lot longer than and was much harder than during many births.

But she did it!

Walter was overdue and his tiny wrinkly feet showed it.

Walter was also big.

And chunky!

TEN POUNDS!

A ten-pound posterior baby!

I know they say you don’t get a medal for giving birth without drugs, but I think Amy deserves one.

But big sister, Evelyn? She was enthralled.

Birth of a Rainbow Baby {Asa}

posted in: Birth | 2

Ten months ago a very special little boy was born. His name was Matthew, he had Trisomy 18 and he was stillborn.

I had the honor of photographing Matthew’s birth. Jessica and Jon showed such amazing strength and courage as they walked through a difficult, complicated pregnancy and birth. I will never forget the moment Jon held Mathew in his arms and looked up at his parents and said, “We saw this through to the end. We have no regrets”.

Jessica got pregnant quickly after Matthew’s birth. Prenatal testing showed this baby, also a boy, was healthy and strong! To say I was excited about photographing this birth would be an understatement.

Jessica’s labor with Matthew was long and hard. Her labor with Asa was much shorter and she handled the contractions amazingly! When I arrived she was at 8 centimeters and still laughing and joking between contractions.

Soon enough Jessica got more quiet and serious. Things were moving along.

I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room when Asa let out his first cry.

Water Birth of Lydia

posted in: Birth | 8

Lydia’s water birth was unusual for me in several ways. First of all, her mom Lynn booked me less than 24 hours before her birth! Usually moms contact me very early in pregnancy, often as soon as they have a positive pregnancy test. Lynn’s due date was so soon (the next week) that I felt very comfortable booking her, knowing it was unlikely her labor would overlap with my other June clients.

Early Sunday morning I got a text from Lynn’s doula (and my good friend) Carolynn. Lynn was in early labor, but there was no reason to rush to the Bellingham Birth Center. Chuck and the kids got ready for church, while I stayed home with my 13-year-old who was still sleeping. I had my bag packed and ready. I was folding laundry and cleaning the kitchen when I got another text from  Carolynn. Things were picking up and it was time to come! I rushed downstairs to way up my son. My plan was to drop him off at church which is just a couple of miles past the birth center, then head over to the birth.

Except before I reached the birth center I got another text…Lynn was feeling “pushy”. I spent the next five minutes explaining to my thirteen year old son that we would be going straight to the birth center. He could stay in the waiting room and I would call his dad and have him pick him up. He eyed me nervously….as only a thirteen year old boy can. Who knew what was going through his mind…

Lynn was laboring in the birth tub when I arrived. She was working hard but so in control. It was hard to believe she was so close to giving birth. She was supported by her husband, Reid, and doula Carolynn.

Within a half an hour of my arrival she was quietly pushing.

The moment of birth was surprising as well. Lynn delivered Lydia’s head in the tub, but was unable to push the rest of her body out. The midwife quickly called for a birth stool, and helped Lynn out of the tub…with the baby’s head already born. The power and strength of a woman in labor will never cease to amaze me!

{I have photos of that part, but they are more graphic than I share  publicly}

Once Lynn was on the birthing stool, she delivered the rest of Lydia’s body easily.

Lynn had one very specific request when she booked me to capture her birth. She wanted a photo of her baby still attached to the umbilical cord. I have never taken an image like this, nor had a client request it, but I was thrilled at the suggestion. An hour or so after Lydia’s birth, Carolynn and I spread out a white towel and set up this image.

Less than 12 hours after posting it on Facebook, I was contacted by SheKnows.com. They wanted to share the image. After getting Lynn’s permission, and the article in SheKnows came out, the photo was also featured on: ABC News, Parents.com and Redbook. It was such a surprise, since I very nearly didn’t photograph this birth at all!

Congratulations, Lynn and Reid! It was such an honor to be able to capture Lydia’s birth.

Aria’s Birth {Bellingham Birth Center}

posted in: Birth | 1

As a birth photographer, I never know quite what I am going to be walking into when I get The Call…am I in for a long night? Or will I barely make it in time? Birth is never, ever predicable. I was called to the Bellingham Birth Center in the middle of the night and as soon as I walked in the room, I knew I would be home before breakfast. Cassie was already hard at work and complete in her birth zone.The beautiful natural birth of Aria at the Bellingham Birth Center. Photos by Renee Bergeron of Little Earthling Photography

I love attending birth center births. My first two children were born at a birth center up in Alaska, so these births always have a special place in my heart.

Cassie was completely focused on the task at hand…barely aware of the other people in the room. With no prompting, she began pushing when the time came.

Cassie’s water broke in a huge gush, drenching the midwife. Baby Aria was on her way out, so there was no time to clean up.

As soon as Aria was in her mama’s arms, Cassie curled up around her and just held her close. It was such a touching moment.

I don’t think there has ever been a more proud or prepared big sister than Eliana! Even being awaken in the  middle of the night and brought to the Bellingham Birth Center wasn’t enough to dampen her enthusiasm! She talked and talked and talked some more…all about her baby, who she insisted on being named Aria.

Once Elaina left with her grandparents to be tucked back in bed, it was time to dress baby Aria…
