The Birth of Umiko

Lauren was already in hard, I need to stop talking and focus during contractions labor, when I arrived at the hospital to photograph the birth of her first baby.

Monitors used to measure baby's heart rate during labor.

I was especially excited to attend Lauren’s birth because her mom, Sarah, is a good friend of mine. I absolutely love it when I am at a birth with friends.

Lauren labored long and hard to bring her first baby girl into the world.

Umiko's natural birth in the hospital was long. First births can often take 12 hours or more.

Lauren’s husband Matt was tucked in and resting when I arrived. I love that St. Joseph’s has these couch/beds right in the labor rooms. I’ve slept on them myself, more than once, during a long birth.

After taking a rest, Matt was ready to get back to helping Lauren labor naturally.

After a rest, Sarah took backstage while Matt supported Lauren.

St Joseph's has nice, large tubs in their birth rooms.

Having given birth nine times myself, I have to say, few things feel as good as a hot bath during labor.

Finally it was time to push her baby out.

Who doesn’t love the excitement that fills the room as moms get ready to push their babies out? Some moms are nervous, some are excited, and some are just downright ready to push their baby out and be done!

Pushing a baby out is one of the most empowering things a woman will do.

The moment of relief. Her baby is out and they meet face-to-face.

Skin-to-skin with daddy is such a great way to keep baby warm and comforted while allowing baby to get used to daddy’s smell and heartbeat.

Everyone expected Umiko to have black hair like her mama. As soon as they laid this sweet baby girl on the exam table, under the heat lamp, I noticed it wasn’t black at all. It was dark blondish-reddish, just like her daddy’s…and the ends were even lighter!

And can we all just take a moment to admire the blond fur on her upper arm?

My favorite part of the birth may have been when Lauren starred at Umiko and said, in awe, “I made an entire human!”

Yes, you did, Lauren, a gorgeous one at that!

Congratulations, Lauren and Matt! It was such an honor to be present for Umiko’s birth. You three make a perfect family.

Should I Hire a Birth Photographer for my C-Section? {Imogen’s Birth}

Should I Hire a Birth Photographer for my C-Section?

I have been photographing births since 2010 and sometimes I have clients wonder if they should hire a birth photographer if they are having a c-section. As a birth photographer, I am there to document your baby’s birth, no matter how the story unfolds. I have documented home births, birth center births, natural births, births with spinals, epidurals, VBACs, birth with forceps, births with vacuums and, of course, c-sections! No matter what happens, this is your baby’s birth story.

A beautiful maternity session in the woods by Bellingham maternity photographer, Renee Bergeron of Little Earthling Photography.

Now let me share with you about Katy.

Katy contacted me very early in her pregnancy. She and her husband were planning a natural birth at the birth center but placenta previa changed everything. When Katy called to tell me she was going to have to schedule a c-section I assured here that I would still document her baby’s arrival. Plans, or no plans, this was her baby’s story. We had a fantastic maternity session a few weeks before her scheduled c-section and kept in close contact about her upcoming birth plans.

On the morning of their baby’s birth, I met Katy and Bob at the hospital bright and early (actually it was dark; it was 5:30 am) and was able to capture their baby’s story from start to finish. While I wasn’t allowed in the OR, I was still able to capture their baby’s birthday in full.

During the actual surgery, I took a coffee break and waited in the waiting room until Katy and Bob were settled back in their room. Then I returned to capture Imogen’s first hours.

So to answer the original question, “Should I Hire a Birth Photographer for my C-Section?” my answer is a hearty, “yes!”

Moms often find they don’t remember the events of the day clearly due to surgery and pain meds. If you end up having a c-section, even if it wasn’t what you hoped for, it is your baby’s birth story.

Harlan’s Birth {35 Week Preemie}

I received a text from Quincey in the middle of the night, five weeks before her due date.

I had a lull between birth clients in February. My December and January clients had given birth. I had two births booked for March, but none for February. As much as I love being a birth photographer, the on-call nights can be tough, so I always relish the small breaks between clients.

Quincey’s text came as surprise. She wasn’t even that close to her due date! It turns out, her little boy was in a big hurry to arrive. Because he was so early Quincey’s planned birth center birth turned into a hospital birth. Stunning birth images of a 25 week preemie by Little Earthling Photography of Bellingham, WA.Nick and Quincey made an amazing team. They were so in touch and connected to each other. Stunning birth images of a 25 week preemie by Little Earthling Photography of Bellingham, WA.

Quincey was experience a lot of pain during her labor, including severe pain in her side. She labored with amazing strength and courage!

Because Harlan was so early, he had to be taken directly to the warmer.

Quincey had just a few precious moments with Harlan before he was taken to the nursery. He needed a little bit of support and spent a couple of weeks in the hospital.

Luckily, I was able to  go back and capture images of Harlan in his home once he was released from the hospital. I will share those photos soon.

Congratulations Quincey and Nick! Harlan is a beautiful baby.

The Birth of Odessa {Bellingham Photographer}

Sweet little Odessa was in a hurry to arrive. Not only was she born a bit early, but she arrived just ten minutes after her daddy called me! I’m fast, but not quite that fast. Eliana {Bellingham Birth Photographer}

I have had the honor of being a Bellingham birth photographer for almost four years now. Each birth is so unique, so beautiful. I have especially enjoyed watching mamas who use hypnobirthing. Whether in the hospital or at home, these mamas have amazed me. Eliana’s labor looked like it was going to be long and slow, but at is turns out, her mama was just extremely relaxed and focused on her birth. In the end, she was born more quickly than anyone expected.
