For those of you who don’t know, my youngest son, Apollo, was born with a rare congenital heart defect called a double aortic arch. He wasn’t diagnosed until he was 18 months old despite his failure to thrive, noisy breathing and struggles with eating. 2012 was The Year of the Hospital for us. Apollo was diagnosed in January, had surgery on his heart in March, a g-tube placed in May and a second heart surgery (in another state) in October. Along with three major surgeries he had dozens of doctor’s visits and various diagnostic tests.
I have been visualizing these Superhero photos in my head all winter, but needed to wait for the weather to warm up and cooperate.
As a photographer, nothing gives me more joy than conceiving an image in my head and then being able to recreate it with my camera. I know these images will always be among my favorites, and I hope they will someday be some of my son’s favorites as well.
Apollo still struggles to eat and running around the yard makes him short of breath.
I took these photos to preserve the Superhero Spirit inside of my little survivor.
Like most little boys his age, Apollo believes he is the biggest, strongest superhero ever.
And I’m not about to tell him any different.

What an amazing project inspired by an amazing little boy! As a photographer, I can totally relate to the feeling when an image in my head can come to life in front of me. I think what you have done with this inspiration is truly a gift.
Thanks so much! I am convinced I get more out of this than the families! It is very healing to me as a mom to be able to spread some joy to these families.
