Pirkko’s Birth {Birthroot Midwives}

Birthrate Midwives birth center in Bellingham, WA

Sometimes I have moms contact me for birth photography as soon as they have a positive pregnancy test. Other times moms contact me very late in pregnancy. Nesting, it seems, sometimes involves deciding that birth photography is at the top of the list for baby prep. I was so happy to be able to fit Paula and Pablo in to my schedule. I wasn’t booking births for mid-August because my family was planning to spend a week camping on the Oregon coast. Paula was due mid-August, five days after our scheduled return home. I normally guarantee to be in town for the two weeks leading up to a mom’s due date. In this case, we agreed to let Paula’s baby decide whether or not birth photography was in the cards.laboring at the birthroot birth center

Paula’s baby waited for my return to Bellingham, and on the afternoon of her due date, I got the call. When I arrived Paula was still chatty; asking how my camping trip was. I have photographed dozens of births and as a general rule, if the mom is making small talk, the baby’s birth isn’t imminent. laboring in tub at birth center

About an hour after my arrival, Paula became quiet. The Birthroot Midwives Birth Center is a beautiful, roomy facility. The room was peaceful and still, with only the sound of music echoing on the walls.birth-center-birth-bellinghamPaula knew exactly what she was doing, and Pablo knew exactly how to support his wife. They worked seamlessly together through the labor. bellingham birth photographer Renee Bergeron captures the raw beauty of birthNo one needed to tell Paula it was time to push. Magnolia {Hospital VBAC}

Kaylee contacted me very early on in her pregnancy. She is a very determined mama who was determined to have a VBAC. I was able to meet with Kaylee a few times through out her pregnancy and take her maternity photos. Kaylee was planning a home birth, but had to completely change her plans just a week or two before her due date. She didn’t let it shake her. She found an OB and began planning her hospital VBAC.

Kaylee was in her birth mode when I arrived. I’m not even sure she noticed me. Kaylee hired local doula, Lisa to help support her through her labor.

Kaylee’s pushing stage went so fast, no one was sure if the doctor would make it…

Things got a little intense at the last minute…we were all thankful for the fast-acting hospital staff.

The Superhero Project {Esther and Christy}

The Superhero Project was created to share the gift of professional photography with families of special needs children and to help them see their inner strength.

This was such a fun session. I got to photograph not one but two superheroes! Esther is the 11th child in her family. She surprised her parents when she was born with both Down Syndrome and a hole in her heart. After a rough start, she has blossomed into a gorgeous, healthy six-year-old.

Esther got totally into this shoot and began dancing spontaneously as I was taking her pictures. She was full of so much joy and happiness. You know the saying, “dance like no one is watching you”? That may just be Esther’s motto!The Superhero Project focuses on turning special needs children into super heroes .

After adjusting to the new normal of life with a daughter with Down Syndrome, Ruth and her husband Daryl did something amazing…they adopted a little girl from Bulgaria who also has Down Syndrome.The Superhero Project focuses on turning special needs children into super heroes .

Esther and Christy are such an adorable pair! Esther, at 6, tries her best to help take care of Christy (age 5). As you can see, these two have a very special bond.The Superhero Project focuses on turning special needs children into super heroes . It was discovered that in addition to having Down Syndrome, Christy had a stroke at some point in her infancy. She still can’t sit up well or walk on her own, but she is working hard in physical therapy to increase her strength and mobility. The Superhero Project focuses on turning special needs children into super heroes . Esther is still learning to talk, but she has an amazing vocabulary of signs. Here she was determined to tell me that she was drinking!

Back in November I did a lifestyle session with Christy to document everyday life in their house. It was so much fun to see the girls again, all dressed up for The  Superhero Project.

The shirts and tutus in these photos were donated by My Lily’s Frilly’s.
