This one-stop guide will help you prepare for your newborn session so we can capture the best images possible.

Where do Newborn Sessions Take Place?

Brand-new babies are one of my favorite subjects to photograph. Newborn sessions usually take place within the first ten days of life. I come to your home so there is no need for mom and baby to pack up and travel so soon after birth. I bring everything needed for the newborn session.

How Do I Prepare for My Newborn Session?

There is really very little to do to prepare for a newborn session. I want them to be relaxing and stress-free for you. Here are some tips to achieve the best images we can.

1. Have the baby well-fed when I arrive

Even if you are a strict scheduler, a variation from routine will help us achieve better images. I suggest you nurse (or bottle feed) baby in nothing but a diaper, wrapped in a receiving blanket. That way I can quickly slip off the blanket and diaper without disturbing the baby.

2. Have the room warm for our newborn session

Crank the heat, fire up the woodstove, etc. The baby will sleep much better this way. Remember, the baby will be naked much of the shoot, so the room needs to be uncomfortably warm.

3.  You can expect the session to take anywhere from 1-2 hours

4. Relax and have fun. No need to tidy up or have things perfect. I’ve had eleven babies myself. I know how difficult the first few days can be, and I know how unpredictable babies are. Sleeping babies make wonderful models, but you’d be amazed at how many photos are taken in between bouts of fussing.

Newborn Sessions are Easiest Between 3-10 Days Old

Please call as soon as possible after the baby is born to set a time for photos. If you have booked in advance I will have the general timeframe blocked off and we can nail down the details one the baby arrives.

Wow, I cannot say enough positive things about Renee. She came to our home; I was feeling a little overwhelmed with the mess and my toddler was struggling as he is adjusting to the big life changes but she did such an amazing job. She was so positive and patient. Genuinely the most comfortable I’ve ever been in a photoshoot. I can’t recommend her enough.
